If you read nothing else, read this about Melanoma. It’s no joke, it’s not cute, and as quickly as it metastasizes into brain/spine cancer – no tan is worth it. If you need a really pale person to take on vacation to feel good about your “base tan”, take me. Not a ounce of pigment in my skin.

With warmer weather upon us, many of us are eager to spend more time outside. But before you head out to enjoy the sunshine, remember one very important thing: protect your skin (and your child’s) from sunburn. Melanoma is no joke, folks; yet, we keep going to tanning beds and sunbathing on the beach. (If the health reasons aren’t enough to motivate you to cover up this season, sun exposure causes significant premature aging: think leathery skin and lots of wrinkles).

According to the National Cancer Institute, over the past 35 years the rate of new melanoma cases among American adults has tripled, from 7.89 per 100,000 population in 1975 to 23.57 in 2010. (NCI 2013). While the exact cause of melanoma is not known, scientists have established some strong risk factors for melanoma that make you 75% more likely to get it. These include:
