About Face Time

Graceful negotiation for the signs of aging

Summer Sensation

With graduation just a month away, summer is barreling right around the corner. It is during April and May that many clients (should) place some focus on their back! It’s the season of summer dresses, beach trips and the time where your skin will often experience the most exposure. Now is a fantastic time to schedule your mole mapping and skin check with your Dermatologist! Don’t put this off! In my own life, I have lost two friends under the age of 30 to melanoma that metastasized into solid brain tumors. It’s no joke. If you need a recommendation of a good Dermatologist, give me a call (or a text, or a PM, or a tweet..you get the hint). While we’re on this subject, I know that like myself you all have stumbled upon Groupons or other special offers for laser services. In no way am I saying that businesses who run these specials are not qualified, just a gentle reminder to know that the laser is not as important as who is holding that laser. If you have “brown spots” and are not sure if they are precancerous, how would a clinically untrained individual know when NOT to treat that brown spot? The body has an incredible way of providing clues when something is wrong. Let’s say there is a lesion and it fails the ABCDE’s of skin cancer and an untrained individual simply removes the “brown spot” for you to gain a laser sale. This could lead to a disastrous diagnosis down the road (stage 3, stage 4?) cancer – all because the “signal” the body used was taken away. All of this to say – be careful. If the laser technician cannot describe cancerous versus noncancerous lesions, do not let them deploy a laser on your skin!

In this last year ALONE, I have sent 19 individuals to a Dermatologist to have lesions (many that the client didn’t even know they had) checked. One, a young mother of a 3 and 5 year old. She had skin cancer. Caught early. Did I make that sale that day? No. Can I sleep at night? Yes. (Well no, but not because of this!) Do I have a client for life? Yes. She was in for laser hair removal. I promised her it could wait. She has since returned with a clean bill of health and now I’ll deliver the hair-free legs that she wants. We both win. Her babies win.

Now that my ever-so-gentle-reminder is out of the way, during the month of April and May, we’re highlighting our specialized back treatments. No two treatments are alike, because none of you are alike (even the three sets of twins I treat)!

Classic Back Aesthetic treatment. Includes cleansing, exfoliation, extractions and moisturizing treatment cream application. regular price $60 (20% off – $48)

Bacne  treatment. This Aesthetic back treatment is intended for individuals with active back acne/breakouts. Cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, light glycolic peel and skin detox treatment mask included. regular price $75 (20% off – $60)

Lightening & Brightening: This laser and IPL service includes all components of the classic back treatment – with the addition of laser and IPL for the removal of scarring, brown spots or red dots. regular price $125 (20% off – $100).

We can’t wait to hear all about your fun adventures and the cool trips you take this summer. Play it safe! Because we’re all about protected exposure at About Face, here are some tips to protect your skin during times of high exposure:

Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. (early morning or late night runs)
Whenever possible, seek shade. (Take a beach umbrella along)
Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 – and reapply every two hours. Reapply after every swim or profuse sweating. (If you are not sure what kind of sunscreen is best for you – ask us for a recommendation).
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and if possible, tightly woven, full-length clothing.
Don’t forget your lips! Wear lip balm with sunblock with an SPF 15 or higher.
Wear UV-protective sunglasses.
Please just stop the use of tanning beds. Melanoma is not cute.
If you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time, check the UV index. Reapply sunscreen accordingly.
Obviously, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can reflect off water, sand, concrete and snow, and can reach below the water’s surface. However, certain types of UVB light penetrate fog and clouds, so it is possible to get sunburns even on overcast days.
If you are taking an antibiotic or other medications, ask your health care professional if it may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun) OR LASER.
If there is no way to avoid over-exposure, check out clothing lines that block UV rays. VERY cool. If I had little children, you can bet they’d be sporting this line of clothing. It’s just smart.

Are you ready to be pain free and/or are you ready to get moving?

If you read the above headline and shouted (yes!) then this post is for YOU.

I am excited to be able to share this fantastic opportunity with our clients in and close to Murfreesboro, TN. I have recently partnered with Murfreesboro H3O (click on logo to go to their website).

h30

H3O Aquatics is the most advanced and accessible warm water therapeutic exercise and recreation center in the world and it is right here in Murfreesboro. This facility has been on my radar for quite some time, and I, myself finally started to use the facility. Not only is this business locally owned, it is Veteran owned. They do amazing things for Veteran’s in our community. On my second visit there, I met a Vietnam Veteran who looked me in the eyes and said “you know, this is only my second time here. I just walked 2 miles. In the past several years, I have barely walked from my bed to my living room. This place, well this place gives me HOPE”. If you know me, you know my dedication to Veteran’s.

  • Warm Water Therapy and Fitness  (NO Physician NOTE  Required)!
  • Exercise on your own with Underwater Treadmills, bikes, and other aquatic equipment  cost is .25 per minute per person, or $15 per hour.
  • Individual and small group Personal Training, Rehab, and Swim Lessons – personal
  • Yoga, Pilates, Zumba®, Kickboxing, and Tai Chi in heated therapy pools
    • If you are a person with MS, Tai Chi is highly recommended
    • Want to have personal training, but can’t afford the price? No problem – find 3 of your friends to join you and pay just $10 each for the class. (this is $10 per person times 4 – to meet the training fee of $40). Read more by clicking here.
  • HydroMassage bed provides a custom heated massage (and is one of Lori’s favorite things. ($7.50 for 30 minute massage or $15 for 1 hour massage). This is a private room with a hydromassage table that you control yourself using the touch screen pad.
  • Designed for those who can not swim, private bathrooms, wear comfortable clothes
  • Adults, special needs and abilities, and children age 4 and older (must be potty trained)
  • Walk-in’s are accepted to work out or for hydromassage – but they also take reservations and if you have a tight schedule, I recommend you schedule a time just for you.

If you are one of our clients who has been struggling to lose weight, improve your physical fitness or just need a friendly, no judgment zone place to work out – this is the place.

You know I always come with good news, right? Right! So, here it is:

First, if you want to go into Murfreesboro H30 on your own – go on in and meet Captain Burrows and take a tour of the facility. Plan on staying and trying out the hydromassage table for 30 minutes (no change of clothes or towel needed) – or – exercise in one of their heated therapy pools for 30 minutes for FREE. All you have to do is say “About Face” to Capt. Burrows or one of his staff and it will be completely free. They’ll try not to pivot and march away from you (ha)! One per person only, please. (If you happen to be in the treatment room anytime soon, I do have printed gift certificates available for this free session as well).

Next, we are kicking off our About Face wellness program. This is a program for active About Face Clients only. How do you know if you are an active About Face client? You are if you have been in and treated at least one time in the last calendar year. If you haven’t been in during the last 12 months, you know how to take care of that! Click here to schedule an appointment! This is necessary because in order to create an affordable well-rounded wellness program that works for everyone, I have to know you. During your treatment, we’ll multi-task and get your skin in shape too. There will be a free informational hour long session at About Face on Wednesday, January 20th, 2016. Pre-registration is required. At this information only session we will go over the program outline. No one-on-one skincare or wellness counseling will be offered during this hour (other than in group conversation). Bring a notebook and something to write with.

There is a registration fee of $20 to join this group. Contact us by emailing us at (thatwoodardgirl12@gmail.com) or by sending us a message via our Facebook page by clicking here. You may also leave a voicemail or send a text to (615) 796-1915. This phone is not typically answered during the day while we are treating patients, but we will call you either in between or after we are finished.

women in wellness

What kind of wellness program is this?

This will be a 6 days a week, daily opportunity program for you to improve your wellness. There is no on-going fees for this program, with the exception of our group sessions at local businesses.

For example: I have already reserved private sessions at Murfreesboro H30. Some of the first sessions are:

Wednesday, January 20th – 2pm

Friday, January 22 – 7pm

These one hour private sessions are open to the first 8 About Face Wellness (AFW) registered participants. You will be able to get an entire one hour training session personalized for you – for just $10. These dates and times are FCFS. Once you are registered for AFW, you will receive a calendar of daily activities.

In addition to Murfreesboro H30, we’ll be doing group walking hours where I’ve also invited local wellness professionals to join us on this walk and answer any questions! (no cost to you). In other words, some activities will be free and some will have small fees if you chose to join us when we use local facilities. Lori has been working hard to reserve times and dates at local wellness places at reduced costs for this groups participants.  These group activities will include something for everyone, and Lori will be attending all. To ensure the safety of group members, we will not be publicly posting our walk locations. All activities and locations will be sent to only AFW participants.  What’s better than group safety, physical fitness and affordable wellness? The only thing better than this is that AFW participants will be earning points for every AFW group activity they attend for Free skincare or laser treatments. I told you this was going to be good. So….

NOW?

Step 1: register for the program.

Step 2: register for the information only session, Wednesday, Jan 20th – 9am (not mandatory for group participation). Non attendees will receive information via email.

Would you like tight firmer skin with no down time? If so, read on…

Last week, 11 clients who are on our email list took advantage of a special that was offered to me through a laser company. You see, during our laser delivery drama (one of our lasers was shipped to California for maintenance and returned to us broken), we were invited to train on and perform many BODY CONTOURING/SKIN TIGHTENING treatments using a combination of Laser/Light & RF (Radiofrequency) energy. Refirme is the use of Infrared and bipolar RF to bulk heat skin and attempt to shrink collagen fibers in the skin providing a way to tighten the skin AND sculpt the body. . I know many, many clients who have been waiting for this! With this laser, we are able to tighten and lift in the following areas:
face – jowl, crows feet, lines around the lips
neck / under the chin
arms/ “wings”
thighs – outer thighs/inner thighs
flank – “Love handles”

Note: If you are NOT on the email list, please click here and create a profile on schedulicity. This will ensure you get email specials that are not always posted elsewhere.

How does Refirme work?
Lori is highly trained to utilize this revolutionary technology to stimulate collagen production, tone muscles. This laser uses a combination of Infrared and bipolar RF to bulk heat skin and attempt to shrink collagen fibers in the skin providing a way to tighten the skin AND sculpt the body.

How often do I need to come in?
Once every three to four weeks x 2-3 treatments for optimal results. Maintenance is performed utilizing laser genesis.

How many treatments do I need?
You will see an improvement after each treatment, however, most clients report that they are most satisfied with 2-3 treatments.

Is it painful?
There is no pain or discomfort. It is however, cold. We do use ice/cooling gel as well as the built in cooling of the laser tip (that stays between 4-10% – that’s cold).

Is it safe?
Skin Tightening Technology is safe and effective. There is no recovery or downtime. Immediate results, best improvement when multiple treatments are performed in close intervals.

Can everyone have this treatment?
Yes, all skin types can have this treatment. Lori is specifically and extensively trained in skin of color. If you are pregnant or have a pace-maker, you are not a candidate for this treatment.

How long are the treatments?
Each area treated will take approximately 90 minutes per session.

Areas that can be treated:
Face, neck, Upper Chest, Hands, Upper Arms, Abs, Knees, love handles, neck/chin

Do I still need to exercise?
Umm, Yes. (Like I would say no). Skin tightening is a great boost for collagen for those over age 30, however – this treatment is not a miracle. If you leave and immediately gorge yourself or do anything that stretches the skin, well – you may need re-treatment. Come to the treatment plenty hydrated.

Here are some photos of clients that Lori treated last week. See for yourself the amazing results. All of these photos are taken immediately before and immediately after the first treatment.

Now for the great news!  This treatment is one that is typically very costly -due to the fact that the “pulses” have to be purchased by the business (we called around Murfreesboro, Smyrna and Nashville to obtain the cost for the 5 spas that locally offer this treatment. Their prices ranged from $800 per “zone” to $1200 per “zone”. Most of them classify a “zone” as – one area on the face, the entire neck, only one side for love handle or above the knee on one leg (that seem a little crazy – who would purchase just one leg?) – another words, their price is really $1600).  Last week, clients were able to purchase any area for just $250! This was below cost – what I was charged for the pulses used is what clients paid, however in some cases – I did go over the pulse count to achieve the greatest results. I did not profit from these first 11 treatments, I passed 100% of the savings on to my clients. Since my original laser has not yet been returned to service (say a prayer for the technician who arrives from California today) – I have negotiated a pre-purchase price per pulse from the vendor. What this means is – they will allow me a one time purchase of “X” amount of pulses that I can bank. Each quarter, they download the number of pulses I have used and charge accordingly. For example, if I pre-purchase 5,000 pulses at a discounted rate and the first quarter I use 6,000 pulses – they will only charge me full price for the 1,000 overage. All of this to say – if you really want this service for yourself or to give as a gift, purchase an area of treatment for just $300! There is no limit to the number you can purchase! Due to the sensitive timing of their offer to me, all purchases must be complete before close of business Friday 9/25/15 and no exceptions can be made. If you do not have an appointment before Friday and would like to purchase, you may email Lori directly at “thatwoodardgirl12@gmail.com”, or PM the request via the About Face Facebook page. Keep in mind, that final negotiations have not yet taken place, but we believe that our regular full price per Refirme treatment will be $600.

I have been so pleased with this treatment, that I can’t see most of my clients needing more than 2 Refirme treatments for the face, and no more than 3 on any body area. As always, we can maintain the results of this collagen tightening boosting treatment with the use of laser genesis.  For those of you who are great readers and read this entire blog post – and whom love laser genesis as well – we are offering two additional bonus specials. These specials are as follows.

September Refirme package 1

2 refirme treatments – full retail value of $1200

6 laser genesis treatments – full retail value of $600

6 dermaplane treatments – full retail value of $300

Full retail value of $2100, special offer through 9/25/15 – $1380*

This package is intended for the face and will last clients a full year, although the price paid for the treatments within the package never expire. The order of the treatments would be – refirme twice in a row (approximately 3 weeks apart) and then laser genesis to continue the results and maintain overall tightness and healthy looking skin – free of redness, large pores and fine lines, too!

September Refirme package 2

3 refirme treatments – full retail value of $1800

6 laser genesis treatments – full retail value of $600

6 dermaplane treatments – full retail value of $300

3 tightening body wraps treatments in the same area as Refirme treatment – $300

Full retail value of $2700, special offer through 9/25/15 – $1765

This package is intended for the body and/or body face combination. The follow up treatments of laser genesis and dermaplane would be for the face – and the wraps for the body.

Product review: Instantly Ageless

The video above was posted to my Facebook timeline asking for a review of sorts, from a high school friend. I’m sure she did not expect this review. In the field of aesthetics, the one thing we all can 100% count on is a new “product of the day” with extreme promises, miracle status, insert glory music and all. Is it true, and does it work for all? First, let me give you a little disclaimer. I am clinically trained and holistically balanced. Yes, I have sat in far too many “pharma” presentations. Do some of their drugs deliver? YES. Do I, or any of the Physicians I have ever worked with blindly follow them along like Lemmings? NO. We do not take kick-backs (that’s actually illegal) and they do not get paid for writing prescriptions. I am a believer in eastern medicine. I am also a believer in western medicine and I long for the day they live in perfect harmony. I know the services I deliver are unique. I know that most “professional advisers” will tell me my business model will fail because I refuse to sell ridiculously expensive 6 step skincare lines. To this I say: “watch me”. In business school, I had a mentor who was MIT educated. I mentioned “well rounded” students in a conversation, to which he replied: “MIT didn’t much care if you were “well-rounded” (for the program I entered), as much as our ability to focus on Math”. That has stuck with me. I sell laser. A laser platform that cost more than many homes – and one that I have spent more years training on than I have mothered my son.  Delivering safe, efficacious anti-aging medical laser treatments is my focus. Do I recommend products? Sure. “As needed” and very specific to you. I will always believe that those who take to main stream media and recommend “skincare” lines – whether they be “natural” or “chemical” are delivering a bit of fraud. UNLESS, they have studied skin, have credentials, know how tissue responds (well, or poorly) to any product or service, as well as review any medications & supplements you take (and know what that means, or what the contraindications are) – you should regard them as, perhaps, the same you would a girlfriend. But not your skincare professional. What is the difference? Training. Education. The ability and knowledge to know when to tap out. To a Physician. (Personally, I have a supervising Physician who has been in this field for almost 30 years, and then a medical director to also meet the State of TN guidelines. In my past, I have opened, assisted with the opening, or act as the Practice Administrator for roughly 27 local medical practices. With few exceptions, I highly regard these Physicians and know the blessing that has been afforded to me with the ability to “curbside” text or call them. Of course, this is a two-way street. About Face, (all pun intended) is the best thing I have professionally done so far. If any of my strategist friends are worried, I just counted, I have 16 ninety-minute laser services to deliver by the close of business Monday. It’s going to be okay. (If you’re still worried, look how much fun & handsome my son is!)

Ready for the review? Let’s break it down!

Water. First and largest ingredient (92%). Water is relatively free and you should be drinking plenty of it! Use COLD water compresses or ICE and the puffiness under your eyes will go away, too. Eyes are very vascular organs and often the puffiness is simply vessels that are swollen. If you ice the skin under your eyes, your makeup will apply flawlessly. Want to take ice to the next level? Buy yourself a jade roller. It looks like the photo below and is very inexpensive. As in $10. If you need one, let me know. Mine is kept in my freezer. Used religiously every morning. Roll down the face (right over your closed eyes) and you have instant lymphatic drainage for your face.
jade roller
Sodium Silicate: Most commonly used in cements, passive fire protection, textile & lumber processing, refractories, and automobiles = and apparently now – for a volatile area of skin under your eyes. Help me, Lord!
Magnesium Aluminum Silicate: has one of two meanings in skincare products. Either, the presence of a white chalk-like powder that occurs naturally in nature in soil clay, or manufactured industrially for use in products. This form of magnesium aluminum silicate is sometimes referred to as white clay, hectorite or kaolin. It is considered “generally safe”, but the FDA warns that it should be a very limited use. This products version is manufactured industrially.
Acetyl hexapeptide-8 (trade name Argireline and technically known as acetyl hexapeptide-3/Centerchem.  Argireline is a synthetic peptide that is manufactured in Spain. According to their Web site, “Argireline works through a unique mechanism which relaxes facial tension leading to a reduction in superficial facial lines and wrinkles with regular use. Argireline has been shown to moderate excessive catecholamines release.” Whether or not that is true when applied topically comes only from their information, read: there are no published research studies substantiating any use of Argireline topically on skin. So, what are Catecholamines? They are compounds in the body that serve as neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, adrenaline, and dopamine. Epinephrine is a substance that prepares the body to handle emergencies such as cold, fatigue, and shock. A deficiency of dopamine in the brain is responsible for the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. None of that sounds like something you want a cosmetic to inhibit or reduce, correct? If acetyl hexapeptide-8 really worked to relax your facial muscles, it would work all over the face, would it not? So why just pick on the eyes? If all the muscles in your face were relaxed you’d have a sagging mess! You will not have youthful skin, not to mention, following this logic – it would affect your hand if you apply it with your fingers, correct? If this is true and you’re not prepared to glove up each time you apply this product, then please do not apply mascara afterwards. Also, do not pick up a steaming cup of hot coffee near small children or animals – and DO NOT drive your children to school! Paralysis of muscles is no joke.
In regards to working “just like Botox”, regardless of your feelings about injectible Botox – there IS a clinical study that says, basically: NO. I’m surprised my friends at Allergan are not all over this statement.  The clinical study reveals that this ingredient is not even remotely as effective as Botox in reducing wrinkles. If you are a non-believer in clinical studies because of their funding source, simply remember that regardless of who one is paid by, clinical studies must be able to scientifically prove something, or not.  (Source:www.cremedevie.com/clinical_details.htm; International Journal of Cosmetic Science, October 2002
Phenoxyethanol. A chemical preservative (glycol ether) often used in dermatological products such as skin creams and sunscreen. It is a colorless oily liquid. It is abactericide (usually used in conjunction with quaternary ammonium compounds), often used in place of sodium azide in biological buffers because phenoxyethanol is lesstoxic and non-reactive with copper and lead. It is used in many applications such as cosmetics, vaccines and pharmaceuticals as a preservative.
Last ingredient besides artificial colors: Ethylhexylglycerin. This serves as a surfactant and preservant enhancer and acts as a safe preservative in minute amounts. It is a proven preservative-enhancer and is often used instead of controversial parabens, Synthetically derived from glycerin and works by reducing inter-facial tension on the cellular walls of micro-organisms, promoting their more rapid destruction and a wider spectrum activity. Known and published safety measures and side effects: “Although Ethylhexylglycerin is generally considered safe, it has been found to be an irritant to the skin in two studies, causing allergic contact dermatitis”. Beautiful, tight reactive skin around swollen eyes – just what your dermatologist or ophthalmologist wants to see!
A quick glance at actual customer reviews shows and average of 3 stars. The most common complaint is that it works to smooth the skin around the eyes – until you apply make-up or any other liquid.
There you have it. My review. If you still think it’s worth a go, I noticed it ranges from $8 – $130 on Amazon.
What would I rather you do? Drink water, use ice or a jade roller, ingest a lot of Phytonutrients (carrots, even!) via juicing – and yes, another product I DO love, Juice Plus. But, that review is for another day.
Now, back to attempting to process the Laser Bikini line hair removal special ($250 for up to 12 treatments!) and 3 Cellulite shrinking body wraps with free laser genesis for the face ($300) – ends today, and I may crash this server. Happy Friday the 13th!

12 days of Christmas

 12days2

I’ve always wondered why the 12 days of Christmas are discussed and executed prior to 12/25, and I guess it’s easy to see it’s about the “selling” of Christmas. I’ve never been able to sort this out in my mind and allow myself to participate until this year.

For those of you wondering – The origin (and counting of the Twelve Days of Christmas) is complicated.  It becomes complicated because of the differences in calendars, church traditions, and ways to observe this holy day in various cultures. In the Western church, Epiphany is usually celebrated as the time the Wise Men or Magi arrived to present gifts to the young Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12). Traditionally there were three Magi, probably from the fact of three gifts, even though the biblical narrative never says how many Magi came.  In some cultures, especially Hispanic and Latin American culture, January 6th is observed as Three Kings Day, or simply the Day of the Kings (Span: la Fiesta de Reyes, el Dia de los Tres Reyes, or el Dia de los Reyes Magos; Dutch: Driekoningendag).  Even though December 25th is celebrated as Christmas in these cultures, January 6th is often the day for giving gifts. In some places it is traditional to give Christmas gifts for each of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Since Eastern Orthodox traditions use a different religious calendar, they celebrate Christmas on January 7th and observe Epiphany or Theophany on January 19th. See how complicated different calendars can make it?

nativity

It is my belief that Christmas begins on the evening of December 25th with the following day considered the First Day of Christmas (December 26th). Therefore, the twelve days of Christmas begin on December 26 and include (and end) on Epiphany -January 6th. So what does this have to do with skin? You are about to find out!

As many of you exchange gifts on 12/25, we’ve put our heads together and come up with a solution of how you can be a part of About Face’s 12 days of Christmas fun celebration! It’s really quite simple, but we’ll give you an example of how it can work.

We are encouraging those who would love a gift of great skin this year to send this post to your Secret Santa’s. Tell them you would love a gift certificate from About Face and provide them with our contact information. We will take care of the gift certificate (available to be loaded to current clients account, and/or printed and gifted). That seems pretty routine, right? But this is where it get’s to be even more fun – and their gift can multiply!

Starting 12/26 – About Face will post the 12 days of Christmas specials that will end on 1/6. We will list the regular retail value, the sale price for that day – AND the even further reduced price for gift certificate recipients for gift cards sold from 12/11-12/13/14.

For example: 12/26 we post a dermagenesis special. (Laser genesis plus dermaplane). Regular retail value $130. 1st days of Christmas sale price – $100. Gift card holders – $50! (*we are not saying this is actually the first day special, this is just an example). We also heard that the one day the special may be a customized body butter every month for a year – delivered to the gift receiver’s door!

We hope you’ll have as much fun as we do celebrating the 12 days of Christmas starting 12/26 and ending 1/6/15! Before you ask, yes – you may buy yourself a gift certificate.

Email requests to: thatwoodardgirl12@gmail.com, call or text 615.796.1915. Merry Christmas!

Gearing skin up for weather changes with DIY moisturizer

In Tennessee the weather changes fast, sometimes even in the same day.  One minute, we’re in flip flops, the next minute we’re covering ourselves in blankets or pulling out hoodies. In addition to changes in wardrobe (yay for Fall boots!), skin can take a hit too. If you are already a client, you know I believe in seasonal skin care.

For example: during the summer months if you were used to a shiny forehead and breakouts, you may have been using a salicylic or glycolic cleanser, but once the heat is turned on in the house (and the office), your once shiny forehead is replaced with dry, patchy spots. Initially, cut your cleansing with that cleanser – down to once a day (preferably mornings) and then simply use grapeseed oil to cleanse your face at night. Trust me on this one! Even oily skin likes grapeseed oil. It is a fantastic make up remover and adds moisture as well.

lavender

Going right along with my seasonal skincare recommendations, in middle tennessee, most of us do not need a heavy moisturizer during spring and summer, but Fall and winter is a great time to add extra moisture (again, at night). If you are already using grapeseed oil, but really feel like you could use a boost, here are a few DIY moisturizers that I make for a fraction of the cost of any store or spa bought product.

First, select your oil (here is a list of my most commonly used oils):

  • Argan oil (excellent for dry, aging, oily, normal, or acne-prone skin)
  • Jojoba oil (excellent for dry, aging, oily, normal, or acne-prone skin)
  • Grapeseed oil (my personal favorite, excellent for normal, oily, or acne-prone skin)
  • Avocado oil (great for dry and aging skin)

Select a container (preferably a dark glass container) and fill it 2/3 of the way up with your “base” or “carrier” oil.

pretty face

Next, for an added boost, select one of the oils listed below.  These oils are a little more expensive than grapeseed oil, but they will add a beautiful kick to your troubled skin’s pants. It is also okay to not use one of these oils, it will still work to use a carrier oil above plus any of the essential oils below.

  • Borage oil.  High in oleic acids, this oil is great for most skin types, but especially oily and acneic skin.
  • Carrot seed oil. You only need a small amount of this oil, but it’s fantastic for any skin type – there is not anything it will not heal)!
  • Emu oil (emollient like you wouldn’t believe, emu oil is protective and nourishing for dry or aging skin)
  • Evening primrose oil.  Acne, aging, normal skin, you name it – evening primrose oil is fantastic! (This oil  can even be taken internally to help with acne)
  • Neem oil. Neem oil is extremely antimicrobial and healing and is a stellar choice for acne and oily skin.
  • Rosehip seed oil. This is a great regenerating oil (especially if you have scars and or imperfections to resurface) and is great for firming and other anti-aging tricks – a good choice for dry, aging, and normal skin.

Fill your container up to nearly the top with the oils above (except carrot seed oil, you only need a little of that), leaving just enough room for your selected essential oils. If using just one essential oil, you’ll only need enough space for 4-7 drops.

  • Chamomile -Chamomile is wonderfully healing and soothing, so it’s great for ALL skin types.
  • Lavender – great for acne, oily, or even dry skin – lavender is healing, but a little bit goes a long way.
  • Lemongrass – this is great for brightening, lightening and toning the skin (think brown spots or actinic bronzing). Excellent for normal, oily, or acneic skin.
  • Palmarosa – although Palmarosa is great for any skin type, it does seem to work very well for breakouts.   addition to being softening and soothing for aging skin, which, yes, I have)
  • Peppermint – like lavender essential oil, peppermint is great for oily and acneic skin, and just like lavender don’t use very much. It’s very astringent, and it might give a tingle – hang on a few seconds, it will stop.
  • Rose – a wonderful oil for aging, dry and normal skin.
  • Rose geranium = another great, all-around healing essential oil – this is especially good for dry, sensitive, aging, and normal skin.
  • Rosemary. If you have acne and oily skin? You might just want to grab a bottle.

I normally pick 2 or 3 essential oils from the list above to add to my moisturizer. 4-7 drops of any oil is enough. I use a 1 ounce glass bottle and follow the instructions above. I find that many of us are heavy handed when it comes to using products. Keep in mind essential oils are concentrated and do not require very much – a little bit goes a long way. As always, essential oils can be a little “top heavy” meaning, you spend a little money in the beginning (but they last a long time), therefore if you are interested in one of the above, I would be glad to make one for you. If you make one, be sure to let me know how it works for you.

For the readers that read the entire post, your bonus is learning about this once a year special where you can purchase a laser package that will last all year (or half a year – and at a discount!). It doesn’t matter what laser treatment you have each month -you can mix and match (leg veins one time, laser genesis the next, etc)- it doesn’t matter to me,  we do them all! (They do not have to be in 6 or 12 consecutive months and they do not expire -all laser services include facials, so no need to purchase those). This offer expires Friday, November 7th. If you are interested in this offer and do not have an appointment before 11/7/14, please shoot an email to: thatwoodardgirl12@hotmail.com.

See you in the treatment room!

UPDATE/CLARIFICATION

To clarify the special (there have been a lot of questions – I apologize, I assume everyone lives in my head and I should have been more specific. As most of you know, my laser services are already discounted and able to be combined (ie, I treat using any laser in my tool box for the time you have scheduled). Because of this, About Face does not offer traditional “packages” that you might normally be accustomed too. In many aesthetic centers, clients pick from long (and sometimes confusing) “menu’s” – for example: a package of 3 IPL (brown spot removal) for x amount and a package of 6 laser hair removal for upper lip, chin, underarm..you get the picture. In my journey to simplify life (and to please my long time scheduler who claimed clients would call to schedule and when she asked what they would like to schedule, they’d say “whatever Lori says” with the result of that being a long list of clarifications that made me giggle, but not the scheduler! Therefore, clients at About Face, simply schedule time. My fees are flat – $100 per hour for any laser treatment. What does this mean? It means if you have a few stubborn hairs on your chin that need to be removed, and a brown spot or two that have emerged from your last trip to the beach, and you just noticed a little red spot (hemangioma) – I can take care of all of that in one session.  Most clients pay on a “as they go” plan, $100 for any laser and $50 for any aesthetic service.

For clients who are on a “maintenance” type schedule such as myself – and whose best friend is laser genesis for smooth skin with no sign of acne, pores, redness or aging – we schedule monthly (or every 6-8 week) appointments for laser genesis. Laser Genesis always includes a facial, too – so there is no need to schedule and pay for a facial in addition to that. This is best for clients who want to look their best – and stay that way.

The special above – takes into account the already discounted $100 laser discount and then discounts it further for loyal clients. The one year package (they never expire, just a set of 12 laser services) is $900. This makes each hourly laser service $75 versus $100.

The package of 6 works out to be $85 versus $100.

If everyone is still with me, I have had several calls and emails asking questions like these:

1. Can these specials can be “split up”? Meaning, if they bought one years worth (12 sessions) and wanted to do leg veins for one or two of those and maybe another area of the body treated for brown spots, could they do that, and get the rest in laser genesis? The answer is YES. 12 sessions = 12 hours of services.

2. I knew this one was coming…could the package be “split up” meaning can two or more people share one package? The answer is YES.  By yes, I mean, you will have to work out the money part and one person will pay – but you may split the sessions with a written agreement between you and your bff and a copy given to About Face. We will not, however – keep up with who has used how many – we will simply have 12 to use. We will notify both bff’s as each one is used.

3. What if I really want to purchase the 1 year package, but I go out of the area for an extended time during the summer, etc? The answer is no problem. The package is for 12 sessions. It is safe to treat with most lasers every two weeks. If you want to use one session for your face, and the other for a laser bacial (thats a facial for your back) – we can do that, too. Flexibility, it’s what this is all about.

Laser Specials
Laser One year $900.00 USD
Laser 6 months $510.00 USD
Essential Oil Moisturizer with 2 oils $20.00 USD
Essential Oil Moisturizer with 3 oils $25.00 USD

Free skin care educational events

 aboutface

After much planning, About Face is excited to announce that Free skin care educational events are now available. Isn’t that great? Yes, but, what exactly are they?

These events are intended for groups of friends, family, co-workers, church groups or other nonprofit organizations that have a group of people who would like to learn more about skin care do’s and most especially, the don’ts!

During this estimated 90 minute round table discussion, attendees will receive the real story about skincare, including (but never limited to):

Sensitive or reactive skin (Rosacea)

rosacea

Aging (or signs of aging prevention)

aging skin

Dehydrated skin

dry skin

Hyperpigmented skin

age spots

Acne

adult acne

As well as Essential oils and other non-chemical products for skincare and DIY skincare.

In addition to the topics listed above, there will also be some time for Questions and Answers (with a recommendation to always send the more complex questions ahead of time, so they are sure to be covered) as well as some basic skin care recommendations.  This is not a sales event. The coordinator of the event would only benefit as an individual by

A note about MLM (multi-level marketing) OR commercially sold skin care. I do not endorse nor sell any of these skincare lines, nor will I. Personally, I have never been able to wrap my brain around spending a lot of time selling someone else’s brand. In no way does this mean do I think you should not sell MLM products. If the business model fits you, your family and all other points then it’s right for you. I chose to sell my work and my (over 14) years of training by delivering above average services and making product recommendations that contain the most natural ingredients without costing a small mortgage. In general, I do not believe in “kits” of products where a one size fits all with this problem sort of mentality. It simply does not work, ever. Even if it causes no harm, it is generally very expensive and can not address the real signs of aging on it’s own.  If you’d like to ask me more specifically about a MLM, please schedule a consultation with me.

Very often, I get asked about specific products. I have seen some good products out there, and some not so good, and some that are down-right scary.  Inspired by my vision of a culture of care, I’ve created a company powered by principle and integrity of service. Everything I do is in the interest of fostering well-being. I believe skin care is individualized and affordable by all. I believe in seasonal skin care and am trained to identify which product ingredients work for each problem within each individual’s own unique self.

So what do you have to do to attend an event? Find someone to coordinate a skin care educational event, pick the time, date and location and schedule your class by clicking here. Click “schedule now” and scroll to the bottom of the list where “Educational Event” is listed. If you do not see a time slot available on the scheduler that works, please email or call to get these worked in.  These events are great for girls night out, Mom’s groups – anyone really. Schedule your work space conference room as a thank-you to co-workers or employees – just remember, this is not a sales event and no participant will be asked to purchase anything. If you are a non-profit organization and would like to host a fundraiser, all attendees at your event will be tracked and your organization will receive a quarterly check for $10 for every aesthetic and $20 for every regularly priced laser service they purchase for one year. (I am not allowed to tell each organization who came and what they treatment they received, they will simply receive $10 or $20 for each service bought and tallied to that organization as the referrer. My services are priced simply. All aesthetic services are $50 and all laser services are $100. There are no packages.

See you soon!

Back to school and some new fitness in town!

It’s hard to believe that it is back to school time already. Around my house that means JROTC has already started up (today my cadet got to stuff bags for teachers as they return tomorrow). Of course it means shopping for school supplies and re-working schedules.

At About Face Time, it means the end of an extremely successful (& popular!) Summer Skin Camp. As many of you know, we believe in seasonal skin care and as the summer fades away, we hope any signs of too much fun in the sun does as well. All of the Summer Skin Camp participants have asked for the next round of “camps” as they really don’t want this one to end.

back to school

Since we normally have exciting things and great specials around the holidays, we decided we could sneak another 12 weeks in before that time – so here they are:

Put your best face forward: This package is designed for the student. This 6 week package will include a weekly visit to About Face Time for deep cleansing, extractions, chemical peels, laser if necessary for scarring, skincare 101 tips and more. This package is great for students who would benefit from clearer skin during their first few weeks of school and beyond.  $200 (Savings of $100).

Fade away 1: This package consists of 3 chemical peels and 3 IPL treatments (for the removal of brown spots). Can be used for any area of the body. $300 (Savings of $150).

Fade away 2: This package combines 3 IPL for any brown spot removal and 3 spider vein removal treatments. $400 (Savings of $200).

Maintain: This package consists of 3 laser genesis treatments and 3 aesthetic services for the face (chemical peel or facial). $300 (Savings of $150).

uplifted

Uplifted: This package consists of 3 laser genesis treatments for the face, 2 body skin-tightening services for abs, thighs, love handles or knees, 2 dermaplane treatments and 2 spider vein removal treatments. $500  (Savings of $250) – This package also includes 1 bottle of choice Essential Oil & one travel sized grape seed oil (4 ounces).

* The above special packages must be purchased no later than Friday, August 1st at 4pm to be used between 8/2/31-11/30/14. If you can not stop in to purchase, send us a note and we’ll be glad to email you an invoice that you can pay online.

pure barre

Have you heard? There’s a new fitness studio opening in Murfreesboro! Pure Barre, Murfreesboro’s newest fitness center will help clients focus on the areas that we all struggle with the most – Pure Barre lifts the seat, tones the thighs and upper body, and creates long and lean muscles without bulk through small isometric movements centered around a ballet barre. Clients are attracted to Pure Barre because of the results it produces and how it makes them feel- strong, healthy and confident. Pure Barre has exploded in popularity due to its extremely effective technique, which transforms the shape of clients’ bodies in record-breaking time.

class schedule

Pure Barre Murfreesboro Class schedule – beginning 8/18/14!

I had a brief introduction to this fitness technique when I was out of town visiting a friend. As a physician, she felt this would be a great choice for me as I have had difficulty with heavy impact, high cardio type fitness since my lengthy hospitalization in 1996. It appears my “compromised” pancreas doesn’t play well with others and reacts to high/heavy impact rather violently. It has been advised for years that yoga and pilates is a better choice for my compromised self. The problem for me was that I thought I’d be bored. I had taken yoga before. My head was all over the place as I was creating lists, wondering about all things possible instead of embracing yoga.  I admit, I was hesitant about Barre too. I spent years in dance class, but never ballet. Tap and Baton for me- because, you guessed it – they were fast! I was only able to take a couple of classes during my visit, but did leave wishing we had one locally. Being clinically trained, I liked their technique. You may not think you’re working hard, but you’ll be lifting and toning parts of you that you forgot existed! I loved that the class was made up of all shapes, sizes and capabilities. Sure, there were others who were far more graceful looking, but it was great fun! I love the fact that in Murfreesboro, everyone will be new to it, so we’ll all be starting together! Keep me accountable, ladies!

Essentially, barre classes mix elements of Pilates, dance, yoga and functional training, and the moves are choreographed to motivating music!

Pure Barre opens in Murfreesboro on August 18th! They have a great special going on if you purchase before the opening – 6 weeks of unlimited classes for just $100.

barre goals  Since we believe in fitness and in personal goal-setting, of course we’ll sweeten the deal! If you purchase their grand opening package (and bring a copy of your receipt), we’ll pay it forward and give you a complimentary laser treatment! Now, there’s just NO excuse – 6 weeks of unlimited fun fitness & improve your skin? Nothing to lose – including money!

laser facialFor those of you who’d like to try out individual classes, we’re offering the following discounts:

Show a receipt for one individual Pure Barre Murfreesboro class – receive 20% off any service

Show a receipt for 5 classes and receive a free facial or chemical peel.

I think you’ll like it, and I think you’ll see changes to your body quickly!

  We’ll see you there.

All you are to me is dead skin anyhow.

Do you have extremely sensitive skin, rosacea, or enough “blonde/white/light” fuzzy hair on your face to be considered a Tennessee peach? If so, you’ll be pretty excited about this not-so-new service being added back on to the list of services at About Face! Clients have asked about this service frequently enough for it to appear regularly in our arsenal of anti-aging secrets.

peachfuzz

Because fuzz only belongs on peaches

It’s – Dermaplaning (or dermablading).

Dermaplaning (not to be confused with microdermabrasion) is a non-invasive & no down-time skin care procedure that is used to remove any fine facial hair and is touted as an excellent method for the exfoliation of dead skin cells.  It rejuvenates the outer surface layer of the skin, improving its texture and freshening its appearance.  It removes dead skin cells leaving the skin smooth and vibrant! The results are a glowy fresh faced appearance with the temporary disappearance of any unwanted facial hair.

pretty

Since it is extremely gentle, it is perfect for those with very sensitive skin, inflamed rosacea, pregnant or nursing women and those who are more comfortable with a non-chemical exfoliation approach to skin exfoliation. Immediately following treatment, clients will see noticeable improvement in the texture and appearance of the skin.  Bonus = make-up will go on smoother and products will penetrate the skin better following this treatment. If you love Laser Genesis and want an extra boost, ask to have your skin prepped for laser with Dermaplaning!

What to expect

During a Dermaplane session your skin will first be cleansed and ph balanced. After this initial cleansing process a 10% povidone iodine and or acetone will be applied to your face. Povidone iodine is traditionally used to prevent infection and it is perfect for preventing the spreading of bacteria from any recent break-outs on the skin. Once your skin has thoroughly dried, your skin will be pulled taunt as a surgical blade* is feathered across the surface of your skin. This does not hurt and will not cause broken skin (nor any bleeding).

* After discussing with our Medical Director, we feel it is best to use disposable (one time) use surgical blades. There is a slight cost increase to us, but we feel strongly that in any skincare procedure it is best to use disposable equipment as much as possible. Although we take extra steps to prevent the spread of any germs,  we just do not feel reusable (autoclaved) surgical blades are worth the risk. One clients “good bacteria” is good for their skin, but maybe not for yours! If having this procedure elsewhere, ask your clinician to use disposable blades (you should be able to hear them opening the package and see them dispose of the blade into a sharps container after use).

Recommendation

We recommend that you have this service once every 4-6 weeks. Regular exfoliation (twice weekly) with at home exfoliator should resume 1 week following this procedure. Dermaplaning will be added to our regular menu of service for $50. It will include all steps outlined above plus any facial extractions that are needed. 60 minute service.

Micro Peel

Want to step it up a notch? Immediately following your dermaplaning a Glycolic Acid treatment can be applied to your face. This is an ideal treatment for stimulating collagen and restructuring the skin to improve hyperpigmentation (brown spots), fine-line wrinkles, texture, and skin impurity. The micropeel also significantly improves dullness and laxity that occurs during the natural aging process. Dermaplaning + Glycolic peel = Micro Peel. The micro peel service will be added to our regular menu of service for $60. 75 minute service.

mirror woman

DermaGenesis

You know how much we love our laser genesis around our treatment room! (Still the number one requested staff service) and my all time favorite. You’ve probably guessed by now DermaGenesis combines Dermaplaning and Laser Genesis. Immediately after the dermaplaning process a complete Laser Genesis treatment will be completed. This mini-escape will end with an anti-aging facial mask that will replenish your skin’s moisture and enhance the tightening effects of Laser Genesis. DermaGenesis will be added to our regular menu of service for $150. 90 minute service.

special package deal

As with any introduction (even if it is a re-introduction!), we have to extend a special offer. Beginning 7/14/14 and ending promptly at noon on 7/18/14 grab a mini-package of these services with the following specials:

  • Dermaplaning – package of 3, $130 ($20 savings)
  • Micro Peel – package of 3, $150 ($30 savings)
  • DermaGenesis – package of 3, $400 ($50 savings)

Non-Profit Love

Speaking of peaches…one of my most favorite peachy keen non-profit foundations is Peach’s Neet Feet. Peach’s Neet Feet is a random acts of kindness based, non-profit organization that provides custom, hand-painted shoes to children living with disabilities and fighting serious illnesses. Many of our local cancer fighter’s have been recipients of Madison’s painted wonder super-kid shoes, including Murfreesboro’s own -Ms. Carlee Beam! We are kicking this month’s donations up a notch! Donate any amount to either Peach’s Neet Feet or Cure For Carlee and be entered to win a FREE package of DermaGenesis described above (value of $450). Each donation of $25 will earn you one entry. Entry dates are donations dated 7/14/14 – 7/31/14. One winner will be chosen on 8/2/14 from all entries. (For example for each increment of $25 you will receive one entry form. Donations to each non-profit will be added together). Donations will be confirmed with the non-profit and the winner will be notified 8/2/14. If you do not want to make an on-line donation, you may write a check payable directly to the non-profit and drop off at About Face. We’ll mail them in and complete your entry form.

Click here to visit Carlee’s website (click donate at the top).

Click here to visit Peach’s Neet Feet website (click get involved at the top).

Watch this video all the way to the end to see the Peach’s Neet Feet video to learn more about her work and the sweet dedication to one of our local Childhood Cancer Angels (and the one who took a large piece of my heart to Heaven). Click here to watch.

I can’t wait to see who our winner is! Maybe I can get Carlee-girl to draw the winner on 8/2!

Happy middle of July~ Lori
